Nauvoo Some More

Our second day in Nauvoo we finished visiting the sites of Nauvoo. We went to the historic cemetary in Nauvoo and found the grave of Charles Robison and his family. We visited the land office in Nauvoo and found Charles owned property near the site of the temple and some more property close by also. Charles was a prosperous minister. It did not indicate what church he was a minister for. We believe this may be an ancestor because Gary's grandfather's name is Charles Lester Robison. This will give us some geneology to work out.

We drove to Carthage to see the jail our prophet, Joseph Smith, was martyred in. The original door with the bullet hole from the shot that killed Hyrum Smith is still standing. Joseph hugged his brother before going to the window where he also was shot and killed. It gave me goose bumps to be in the place this terrible event took place.

Gary and I both commented on the economy of both Carthage and Nauvoo as we drove down the highway along the shores of the Mississippi River. There were many vacant and run down properties in both of these towns. As we further away, we saw numerous beautiful homes several miles away from these communities..both residence and beach homes. The economy seemed to be healthy....the crops were tall and plentiful.

We saw people fishing on the Mississippi in boats similiar to ours, but we did not see any barges floating any where. We saw a river boat from a distance. We stopped at a wide section of the river. It was an awesome site. It was dark when we crossed over the river on Tuesday night. We returned to our hotel at about 6 and had dinner again in the dinner room of the hotel..mmmmmmm good.

On Friday after breakfast we packed up the car and stopped at the carriage ride that goes down by the river. It was a beautiful little 45 minute trip through the trees.

We left to go to Adam-on-diam in Missouri. It was about 5 hours before we found it. It is the place in Jackson County that Christ will come when he returns to Earth. It is believed to be The Garden of Eden. There were no markers or indication how much land was church property. The road there was like riding a roller coaster. You could say they were tickly the tummy roads.

We stayed in Hastings, Nebraska, for the night in one of those stinky non-smoking rooms. We were glad when morning came and we started our trek home again. We stopped at Little America for an ice cream cone. We made pretty good time until we got to Parley's Canyon. It was a parking lot from the summit so we made our way down to the East Canyon exit and came down Emigration Canyon.
